I certainly don’t mean to disregard anything. I was just curious as to the calculation discrepancy (because I don’t think my Edge takes wind, etc., into consideration … though maybe?). Anyway, regardless, I’m doing my best. Thanks so much!

Sounds good. I’ve just been so curious as to why there’s such a wide discrepancy! I can right now “safely” handle around 350 calories an hour regardless. 😉 I was just wondering!

Hi! This has been on my mind for a while now and I thought I’d see what the going consensus was. If I ride for, say, four hours on my bicycle outside, I can  (per my Garmin Edge) burn upwards of 1600-2000 calories. If I ride on my TRAINER for four hours — and honestly probably doing more work while doing so, since I’m steady pedaling rather than…[Read more]

This is all incredibly helpful! I’ll look forward to seeing how my numbers shape up over time.

Hope Nelson replied to the topic Tour de Frederick Century Ride Aug 10 in the forum Ironman Program (IMP) for Paid Participants 3 years, 11 months ago
Oh yes, I am fine with some hills. I really was just looking for a course that wasn’t quite as hilly as the Indian Head 100, which I feel takes one up a mountain or two. 😉 I am really relying on the marketing that says “The century ride enjoys gently rolling terrain north of Frederick,” but I recognize they may be downplaying it somewhat. 😉

Ooh, this sounds good. I’ve been looking for a century to do that — forgive me — wasn’t ungodly hilly. 😉 This may fit the bill perfectly! I may see if my father wants to come up for it too.

Ah, perfect. I will not worry with it much, then, and just continue on with dignity. 😉 Thank you for clearing that up!

This is my first season using TrainingPeaks. Currently my “CTL” is always 9999, as is my Form. That feels wrong to me. 😉  Shouldn’t it be a number that is not so high? I’ve read several articles on it but have no idea whether I should do something about this or ignore it and wondered if anyone else had any advice! 🙂

Hope Nelson replied to the topic How to bake in shorter triathlons in the forum Ironman Program (IMP) for Paid Participants 3 years, 11 months ago
OK, that makes sense! I’m never a speedster anyway, so it’s easier I think for me to turn the “race” portion of my brain off and treat it as a training day. Does it make sense to move my long ride to midweek or something, I wonder? Or just plow straight through? 😉 Asking this as someone who has done IM before, if that makes a difference.

Hope Nelson replied to the topic Power meter? in the forum Ironman Program (IMP) for Paid Participants 3 years, 11 months ago
Completely unhelpful answer here, but: I haven’t managed to make the changeover to a power meter. This year I’m intending on letting heart rate be my guide. My dad uses the Vectors and confirms that they have gotten through most of the earlier production issues, but your mileage may vary. 🙂

And simply NOT racing is also not out of the question. With the possible exception of Montclair, which I want to do for the open-water practice. On the other hand, I do like having some practical race experience under my belt each year … 🙂

Welcome, Sebastiaan! I’m doing IMMD too, as I think several other participants are. Here’s hoping for a less-hot day than an Eagleman race!! 🙂

Hi! I’ve registered for three of the Rev3 sprint series races this spring — Westfields on 4/28, Salute on 5/25, and Montclair (great for open-water practice) on 6/23. I know at our kickoff meeting that Coach AJ suggested/requested/demanded? 🙂 we taper through those … but I know that is going to really give my training cycle a serious hit. So I…[Read more]

Friends, just got the notice from Ironman leadership that Gerry Boyle, the best race director in the world, has died. I’m heartbroken to hear it! He was the most supportive, kind, wonderful leader of Ironman Maryland and Eagleman. The race won’t be the same without him.

I confess to you all, I am lousy when it comes to keeping up with strength training in any form or fashion. I KNOW I would be stronger and maybe faster in races if I kept up with this! So I’m trying to come up with ways to integrate it into my daily/weekly life without even noticing I’m doing it. 😉 With that in mind, what is the thinking on the…[Read more]

These are all great recommendations!! I’ll add another question to the mix: What is the thinking about using our race/tri bike exclusively versus bringing in the road bike on occasion? For instance, on some of the more crowded trails and roads, I prefer my road bike (since it’s hard for me to stay down in aero anyway with pedestrians and cars all…[Read more]

Oooh, the potatoes are something I’ve been meaning to try! One detail keeps stopping me, though — how do I keep them fresh the morning of the race (and the hours in my jersey)? Do I just keep them in a little cooler for pre-race/swim/transition and bring a bag of them out in T1 to put in my jersey pockets? I always get stuck on the details. But I…[Read more]

Hello, friends! I was wondering what the latest thinking was about doing a good bit of one’s long rides on the bike trainer. I’m a total Zwift addict and, while I like riding outdoors of course, I feel like I get a better workout on the trainer (no stopping for cars, stop signs, people, animals, etc., etc.). Is there any downside to doing many of…[Read more]
