It is hard to believe that I have been on the board for two years already! I first served as Director of Events and followed that as Director of Membership.

I encourage all members, who want to make a positive difference in the Club, to apply. We are all volunteers that care!

Since my time is officially up, I too have to reapply for a board position. I would be more than happy and honored to serve you all for another two years!

That’s right, it’s this week! ? Thanks for the inspirational message! It hasn’t sunk in yet, but guess that will change once I am onsite.

Race plan is mostly done! Taking a different approach on it this time. Tapering is very exciting indeed. It gives you time to work on your race plan – LOL!

I am sure to have questions once I get onsite and everything starts to sink in that this is actually happening.

Feedback from IMLP and previous IMMT participants has been very helpful!

Congratulations to everyone who raced IMLP. Thanks Jon, for the race report. Lots of helpful info! Helped to ease some of my concerns.

Here are a couple of questions in advance as they relate to running and hot/humid weather.

    1) When it is hot/humid I adjust my run/walk ratio to be something like 60s/30s. Are there any other racing strategies to help dealing with weather? For instance, I find it harder to breath in the heavier air. I do keep an eye on my HR to make sure it is in the right zone.

    2) What kind of adjustments would one make to a nutrition plan to account for the hot/humid weather? I try to increase fluids and Electrolytes, but that only helps to a point, especially when one’s sweat rate is very high, I.e. no way to drink the quantities needed.

    Lessons learned

    1. All I could think about on the bike was the bike-run HR seesaw. I let my HR climb into Z3 since it was a short ride, but aimed to keep it low so as not to mess with my run.

    2. Need more protein on my bagel.

    What went well

    1. Both bike and run went well. I decided to do liquid nutrition for the whole race, again since it was so short. I kept to my 1 bottle per hour plan.

    2. My run/walk ratio of 120s/30s worked perfectly.

Where do you need to work

    1. Hill practice

    2. Relaxing in the water more. Even though this was probably my quickest open water swim ever, I never truly relaxed/felt comfortable in the water. Second lap was definitely better than the first.

I was very sad not to be able to attend – I was working a conference in Las Vegas. Will definitely listen to the recording.

Here is some feedback from my work colleague, Dan, who I suggested attend, “The seminar with AJ was outstanding.“

I have a 2 hour run scheduled for May 6. Would it be better to do the 2 hour run or use Peasantman as a practice race; or some different combination of Peasantman since it is so flexible, like swim (Oly) and run (Oly x 2)?

I can personally vouch for Stu at Parvilla. He fit me for both my road and tri bikes ensuring I could easily switch between them.

My biggest takeaway was from the Race Planning session and the conversation around the Event itself and the 5 bags you have to pack:

    1. Bike Bag (Have to hand in day before the race)
    2. Bike Special Needs Bag (For retrieval halfway through bike course)
    3. Run Bag (Have to hand in day before the race)
    4. Run Special Needs Bag (For retrieval halfway through run course)
    5. Day of bag

Things you have to account for:

    1. Clothing – Have to account for variations in temperature and light for your race duration, clean clothes
    2. Nutrition – Restocking foods, salts, water, etc.
    3. Parts – Tubes, CO2, etc.
    4. You won’t be getting the special needs bags back. The items will be donated to charity!
    5. Need to make sure you start to plan what goes into these bags starting on day 1 of three week taper

What time will the facility be open to leave bags, etc if we did something before registration?

I am not one of those lifetime athletes that is super fit and super fast. In fact, I didn’t really do any physical activity until about six years ago. I realized then, that unless I started doing something, I was just going to keep layering on the pounds. When I started running, I could barely make it a mile! A couple of years later I started biking because most training plans recommended “cross-training and I happened to have a mountain bike in the basement. This led me into doing a couple duathlons which were all part of a triathlon. At the end of 2013 I decided that I would learn how to swim and do a triathlon. I joined DC Tri Club and enrolled in NTP 2014!

Over the years, I have met some of the greatest people I know. When you train, race and socialize with people, you make great friends. The club offers so many training programs, social events, camping weekends, etc., there is truly something for everybody in the club, no matter what your level of experience is.

Back in 2014, because there were so many NTPers on Capitol Hill, we ended up forming the Capitol Hill Community Group. I have been a co-lead on the group since then and have organized quite a few activities over the years. The training programs, social events , camping weekends, community groups or even the club itself wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the members that volunteered their time to make it happen. It is in this spirit, that I would like to nominate myself, Rob Read, for a board position. I would encourage others to volunteer as well so that we can continue to make the DC Triathlon Club a club we all want to be part of.

    Regards,

    Rob Read
